Local expertise

Why a NYC CPA matters.

New York's tax environment is uniquely demanding — state and city taxes layer on top of federal, the Unincorporated Business Tax catches self-employed professionals off-guard, and multi-state nexus is nearly unavoidable for businesses operating in the Tri-State area.
  • NYC residents pay city income tax on top of NY state — combined top rate exceeds 14.7% before federal
  • New York State's convenience-of-employer rule can tax remote workers based out-of-state if their employer is in NY
  • NYC's Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT) of 4% applies to freelancers and partnerships with NYC-source income
  • NY State and NYC both audit domicile changes aggressively — moving to FL or TX requires meticulous documentation
  • Wall Street equity comp creates AMT, deferred comp, and 409A complexity that requires specialist handling

New York City

tax questions.

Do I owe NYC city income tax?

If you live in New York City, yes — NYC imposes its own income tax on top of state and federal. Rates range from 3.078% to 3.876%. Critically, this applies to residents only — if you work in NYC but live in NJ or CT, you do not owe NYC city tax, though you may owe taxes to your home state.

What is the Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT)?

NYC's UBT applies to self-employed individuals and partnerships conducting business in NYC, at a rate of 4% on net income. Many professionals — consultants, lawyers, doctors — are surprised to owe this on top of state and federal self-employment tax. A Taxperts CPA or EA will determine if it applies and how to minimize it.

Can I avoid NY state tax by moving to Florida or Texas?

Not easily. New York has aggressive domicile rules and actively audits taxpayers who claim to have changed domicile. Simply spending fewer days in NY is not enough — you must establish a true domicile change, including moving your primary home, business interests, and social ties. We help clients navigate this carefully.

How does the NYC tax stack compare to other cities?

NYC residents face one of the highest combined tax burdens in the US — federal (up to 37%), NY state (up to 10.9%), and NYC city (up to 3.876%) can combine to an effective marginal rate above 50% for high earners. Strategic planning — S-corp elections, retirement contributions, deduction timing — can significantly reduce this.
